Google doodles a celebration for its 13th birthday

It's been 13 years since 1998 when two Stanford university students, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, got together to form a company that would change the face of the Internet, for ever. As Google enters its teenage years the company is well entrenched as the leader in the search engine market with more than 90 per cent of the search share, according to Internet statistics firm StatCounter.
Its Chrome web browser had 22 per cent of the global market in July, Microsoft's Internet Explorer had 42.5 per cent while Mozilla's Firefox had 28 per cent. Google's Android OS is also fast becoming the dominant player in the smartphone market.
For its 13th birthday Google has doodled for itself a photograph that shows Google's 13th birthday celebrations. There is a cake on a table with 13 candles on it, the Google logo sits around the table in party hats and gifts and baloons adding to the celebratory mood.
Interestingly, the selection of September 27 as Google's birthday seems to be a one of convenience than the actual date when the company was founded. Google celebrated September 7 (the day when the company was incorporated) as its birthday till 2005. In 2005 Google changed the date to September 27 to make it coincide with the announcement of the record number of pages that the search engine was indexing.
Google doodles have gained immense popularity over the past few years and the Google team has put out commemorative doodles on events ranging from news events, civic milestones, birthdays, death anniversaries and important dates in history.
Google estimates it has created more than 900 doodles since 1998, with 270 of them running in 2010 and about 200 in 2011.

completely free OS(Ubuntu)

Install Ubuntu

1. If you're using a CD: Put the Ubuntu CD into the CD/DVD-drive and restart your computer. You should see a welcome screen prompting you to choose your language and giving you the option to install Ubuntu or try it from the CD.

If you don't get this menu, read the booting From the CD guide for more information.

2. If you're using a USB drive: Most newer computers can boot from USB. You should see a welcome screen prompting you to choose your language and giving you the option to install Ubuntu or try it from the CD.

If your computer does not automatically do so, you might need to edit the BIOS settings. Restart your computer, and watch for a message telling you which key to press to enter the BIOS setup. It will usually be one of F1, F2, DEL, ESC or F10. Press this key while your computer is booting to edit your BIOS settings.

You need to edit the Boot Order. Depending on your computer, and how your USB key was formatted, you should see an entry for 'removable drive' or 'USB media'. Move this to the top of the list to force the computer to attempt to boot from USB before booting from the hard disk. Save your changes and continue.

3. Prepare to install Ubuntu: We recommend you plug your computer into a power source for this stage. You should also make sure you have enough space on your computer to install Ubuntu. We advise you to stay connected to the Internet so you can get the latest updates while you install Ubuntu. If you're having problems connecting to the Internet, use the menu in the top-right hand corner to select a network.

4. Allocate drive space: Use the checkboxes to choose whether you'd like to Install Ubuntu alongside another operating system, delete your existing operating system and replace it with Ubuntu, or – if you're an advanced user – choose the amount of space you would like to allocate to Ubuntu.
5. Begin the installation: Depending on your previous selections, you can now verify that you have chosen the way in which you would like to install Ubuntu. The installation process will begin when you click the 'Install Now' button.
6.Select your location and click 'Forward' to proceed. If you're unsure of your time zone, type the name of the town you're in and we'll help you find it.
7. Select your preferred keyboard layout.
8.Enter your login and password details.
9. Learn more about Ubuntu while the system installs... Or make a cup of tea!
10. Restart and enjoy Ubuntu!

The organisers there also offered a huge laddu costing Rs 6 lakh to the idol. Another 85 feet-tall idol prepared by Gajuwaka based developers using pure clay from Ganga river, coconut ropes and dried rice grass was installed at the port city.
The nine-day-long festivities would end with the immersion of the idols in water bodies. Majority of the idols are immersed in the Hussain Sagar in Hyderabad

Chennai - 372 years young

As the city of Chennai turns 372, The Hindu, from its Photo Archives, brings alive Madras through the years - when horse-drawn jutkas and trams graced the roads, the visits of Jawaharlal Nehru and Gandhiji drew huge crowds, and the Gemini flyover was under construction. Driving on the spacious NSC Bose road was a pleasure but Mount Road already had its share of traffic jams.
